This can be a pretty loaded beginning to a sentence. From role definitions to reliability definitions, your organization has a lot of definitions to figure out.
What happens once youโve come up with all your definitions? You canโt just define and leave it. You have to communicate to the entire organization. And oh, you have to come up with an acronym because we love acronyms!
Reliability and Maintenance (R & M) are two words we at IDCON have spent a fair amount of time defining.
You may agree with our definitions or not, weโd love to know how you define these two words; you can send an email to us at info@idcon.com with your definitions.
Have you noticed how these two words have become nearly one, itโs rare you see one without the other in articles, conferences, etc. in the process/ manufacturing industries.
Weโre just waiting for a mash-up of these two words to show up any day now much like hangry (hungry + angry) or the most awesome and handy mash up everโฆspork! Maybe Reliamain or Reliatenance?
IDCON has defined these two words and have stuck to the definitions (this is key). We have defined reliability this way:
- Reliability is measured as- The product of Quality [%] * Speed [%] * Uptime [%] as it relates to total production.
For more details about this concept, you can consult our article โ Maintenance Management- Defining, Clarifying โReliabilityโ
We define โmaintenanceโ as consisting of corrective maintenance, preventive maintenance including essential care and condition monitoring, and continuous improvement and itโs these actions that ensure equipment reliability as defined above. We could define equipment reliability as the outcome (or product) of maintenance work.
