How Do You Define…??

This can be a pretty loaded beginning to a sentence.  From role definitions to reliability definitions, your organization has a lot of definitions to figure out.

What happens once you’ve come up with all your definitions?  You can’t just define and leave it.  You have to communicate to the entire organization.   And oh, you have to come up with an acronym because we love acronyms!

Reliability and Maintenance (R & M) are two words we at IDCON have spent a fair amount of time defining.

You may agree with our definitions or not, we’d love to know how you define these two words; you can send an email to us at [email protected] with your definitions.

Have you noticed how these two words have become nearly one, it’s rare you see one without the other in articles, conferences, etc.  in the process/ manufacturing industries.

We’re just waiting for a mash-up of these two words to show up any day now much like hangry (hungry + angry) or the most awesome and handy mash up ever…spork!  Maybe Reliamain or Reliatenance?

IDCON has defined these two words and have stuck to the definitions (this is key).  We have defined reliability this way:

  • Reliability is measured as- The product of Quality [%] * Speed [%] * Uptime [%] as it relates to total production.

For more details about this concept, you can consult our article “ Maintenance Management- Defining, Clarifying “Reliability”

We define ‘maintenance’ as consisting of corrective maintenance, preventive maintenance including essential care and condition monitoring, and continuous improvement and it’s these actions that ensure equipment reliability as defined above.   We could define equipment reliability as the outcome (or product) of maintenance work.
