Why do a Maintenance Assessment? There’s 1 good reason.

If your organization wants to achieve world class maintenance, one good tool to use is regular Maintenance Assessments. They will help you decide what improvements need to be made and develop an action plan to implement and track those improvements over time.

Why do a Maintenance Assessment?

It is important to perform these assessments not only for the score, but to discover the gap between our weaknesses and how we improve. The results of an assessment should be used to create an action plan for improvement as well as a measurable vision of where you want your organization to be that you revisit each year. If you don’t assess your reliability and maintenance improvement initiatives, they will not be sustainable.

Compare it to a Safety Assessment. Every organization does (or should) do them every year or 18 months. Imagine starting regular Safety Assessments 20 years ago but never following up or implementing actions related to the results? Where would your safety be today?

What to Assess

So, now you know the 1 good reason of why do a maintenance assessment. The next question is “what to assess?” It’s important to understand that we aren’t assessing people or their performance, we are assessing how well-executed the processes you have in your plant are. These processes include Leadership, Skills Development, Maintenance Planning and Scheduling, Work Management, Preventive Maintenance, Root Cause, etc. Each process you use in your plant should be examined during a Maintenance Assessment.
